CHAPTER TWELVE

Among the things Drew found to be thankful for was Mike agreeing it made more sense for Drew, Jeff, and most of the programmers to fly in on Sunday night for the early December conference rather than on Monday morning. Mike, Murray, and Ken and his wife were going to arrive in the morning, since nobody actually had to do anything until Monday morning, but Delman hated to fly, Frobie, Walt and Gray were easily rattled, and Mishie’s mother hated to fly almost as much as Delman did. Experience had taught them it was always easiest to get everyone settled in the night before, extra hotel night or not.

The flight to Orlando was uneventful enough, and then Drew had the usual ridiculous issues at the rental car counter because he wasn’t twenty-five. Two minivans had been rented in advance, under the company name, with the extra insurance, and it was still a problem. It was always a problem. Fortunately the guy behind the counter didn’t ask who the driver of the second one was, so Drew didn’t have to get into the fact that Jeff was only sort of an employee in addition to being under twenty-five.

It only took fifteen minutes this time at the rental counter. In a pinch, Drew figured he could have Mishie’s mother drive one and Baker the other, but it probably helped that Walt and Gray had wandered off to play with a bank of vending machines, Mishie had sat down on her luggage then pulled out a book and an e-reader, Frobie was texting someone, and Delman was…somewhere. Which bore investigation as soon as he was done with this functionary. None of them looked very responsible.

When the guy asked him if someone else couldn’t drive the car, because they always asked that, Drew waved at his entourage and said, “No, they write code, they don’t drive cars. Especially in Orlando traffic. That’s my job.”

The counter rep did sort of see the wisdom of that, and Drew got his minivans. He took Delman, Walt, Gray and Beeker, and let Jeff wrangle Baker and the women. Less grief, more luggage, so it probably evened out.

Jeff had found Delman in the airport bar, thankfully drinking cola for once, and not getting into a whole lot of trouble other than demanding four cherries and a slice of lemon for his soda.

They got to the conference hotel without a whole lot of trauma despite how much Drew hated driving in Orlando. You added a slightly nutty layout to a lot of new construction and a bunch of drivers who weren’t familiar with the area, and were in strange cars, sometimes driving on the side of the road they weren’t used to, and it was a recipe for traffic mayhem.

Once they were checked in and Drew had distributed keycards, he took his special charges upstairs. He very deliberately settled Delman first, because he thought the guy might be perceptive enough to realize Walt and Gray were being set up, and would say something.
